We had our first square foot gardening success this week - one completed box. Well, almost. I still have to purchase my peat moss, vermiculite, and compost to fill it up. Then we can put together the wood lath grid to mark out the one foot squares. But at least that won’t scratch me up like the chicken wire did. Actually, we got two boxes done, but ran out of chicken wire for cage number two.
And by we, I mean him. Give him a beer and he’ll do anything. Actually, I really did help, and so did our friends Andy and Kat (thanks guys!)
I’ve moved on to planting planning. I’ve been encouraged to see such a variety of seeds and transplants at my local markets.
In Season Local Market had a few veggies including TaT Soi (kinda like bok choy). Saucy. I definitely want to grow this. (I’ve been told In Season is planning to have many more seedlings coming soon. )
Denver Urban Homesteading had a bit more variety and seed packets as well.
Can you guess what vegetable this is?
Hint: It’s not fennel.
Sage Thymes had a lovely box collection of organic seeds with detailed instruction cards included.
And Native Greens had loads of heirloom seeds. The pizza garden collection was pretty much brilliant.
This is an artichoke!
Next week – I’ll be back to my regular veggie posting schedule after visiting opening day of the Boulder County Farmers’ Market. I never thought I’d be this excited for a vegetable market! Yahooooo!

I agree on the Pizza mix. I had no idea you had to use chicken wire. That might have save our tomato plants last year.
What varmits require chicken wire?
I don’t know if it’s because we live downwind of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal or what- but our squirrels are BIG and like to eat veggies, according to our neigbhors. There’s also “GRRR” the friendly neighborhood beagle dog who will probably figure out how to get under the chicken wire anyway. He’s crafty.
